View Full Version : So I found this salvaged Hyper...

Quite a while ago actually, and got a pretty sweet deal on it so it's been sitting waiting for my funds to grow and my endless internet searches to return the much-needed inspiration.
Here's how it sat when I bought it:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/10-22-20089-50-20AM_0076.jpg

http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/10-22-20089-52-14AM_0081.jpg

Bodywork etc. was pretty shot up, some scratches here and there but no major damage..

Then I got to thinking what I wanted and found these, among many others, for inspiration:

Started gathering parts that I wanted and found a hot-rod welder who's also big into the supermoto's to help me out. He's been working on it quite a bit and, after a bit of a slow take-off, we're ripping into her in a big way now and I'm stoked with how it's coming together!! A picture says more than a thousand words, so...:

The fuel pick-up flange is done (took some time, looks good though):
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis038.jpg

Subframe is close to done, much lighter than stock!!:

Seat mock-up, bit further forward:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis051.jpg

Looks good from the back:

Test-fit seat height in relation to pegs/bars etc.:

Tank mock-up side view with filler height:

Tank bottom with new "airbox", how's that for welding skill!!

Top with filler:

Left side view:

With the seat in place:

Close-up:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis072.jpg

View from the back, the protruding tube is the housing for fuel pick-up etc., really no other place for it and it doesn't bother me:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis073.jpg

Another test fit, looking much better sitting further forward on the tank moto-style:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis076.jpg

Mocking up exhaust placement, nice small muffler:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis079.jpg

Clearance between tank and top cylinder:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis080.jpg

Some pretty good progress deserving its own thread or so I felt.. Still a ways to go and once all the fabricating is done, I'll be stripping it to change the frame to a clear title, replace the forks with Ohlins, mount the BST's and she'll be ready to rip before spring (or so I hope...).
Whatcha'll think??

Sweet! That exhaust can looks familiar! :cool2: Gonna be loud! I got the stock headers and udder ceramic coated and put them back on...to loud for me. :p

Any idea how large will the tank be when finished?

Can't wait to see more!

Damn, that is going to be one sick hyper when it is done!

Are you going to go with a smooth rounded look to the outside of the tank or are you going to do geometric edges? Any drawings of what it will look like when done? ETA of finishing?

Thanks for the comments fellas!! And Jeremy, thanks for the tip on the can, gonna look real nice and probably be a tad loud...

As for the tank, not sure what sort of capacity it's going to be. I pretty much said 2 gallons would be acceptable, anything over that is a bonus. The stock monster of a tank went all the way to the back which adds considerable capacity there and my main goal was to keep the back end clean. I'm not really planning any cross-country trips on a 2x4 for a seat anyway :happy57:
Very happy with the progress so far and the quality of the fabrication-work is top-notch. Hope to have it ready by mid-March or so, hoping to see you all at bike-night!!
Keep you posted..

Definitely an angular look on the sides of the tank, not sure on the final shape yet, but we're brainstorming on it.. I did some 3D stuff, but that was more to get an idea of proportions etc., so the shape of the tank is not really what the final product will look like.. My skills are lacking severely to get a really nice rendering out of it, I just do it for fun so here ya go:

Thanks man!! Thinking about leaving it bare, kinda depends on how it turns out in the end, it may need some filler here and there to really get it nice and smooth.. Think it would look pretty cool though!!

Lol, guess I could've clarified that a little.. I found a clear title frame that I bought, so I'll swap the salvage frame for the clear titled one and I won't have to go through explaining the WA State Patrol what it is and how I rebuilt it... Still ends up marginally cheaper than buying a "regular" Hyper, cheap is fairly relative though considering all the aftermarket stuff that accumulated in my storage space :scared10:

Thanks. 8k originally, had some return on unused parts which have been sold. Bought it back in '08 though when the used Hyper market was somewhat more limited..

So, progress is a little slow, however we got some mock-ups for the tank to consider before we do the full welds..

Option 1:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis089.jpg

http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis093.jpg

http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis097.jpg

Option 2:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/P1020667.jpg

http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/P1020673.jpg

Test-fit with leg position:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/P1020666.jpg

I think the second option looks pretty cool. Nice angular lines and flows well. More to come later this week…

Not sure yet. Depends how the finished tank turns out and if I can leave it bare.. If not, flat black/titanium (gunmetal) grey or something on the tank and subframe, frame as is and the seat upholstered white maybe.. Will have to do some more work in MS Paint...

Lotus54

I like the second option better also.

Are you going to clear it or colour?

michel77
01-26-2010, 03:27 PM
So, we built out the design options on the tank a little further:
Option 1 and 2 (left and right) side by side:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis120.jpg

http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis115.jpg

Decided to go with option 2, the right side, gives it a bit more angles and body, some more views:
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis109.jpg

http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis113.jpg

http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis124.jpg

http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis127.jpg

Test-fit for knee clearance, should be good!!
http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz41/Flying_Dutchman77/Hyper/HyperVis111.jpg

Lotus54

I like it with the exposed welds.
I'd just polish the flat areas and clear it!

Plus grinding the welds down make is much more likely to have pinholes.
I know about those, after making a stainless tank for my old Lotus type 54.

It would look sharp either way though.

Next you could pull a mold and make some CF tanks!

Painting the tank black or red would tone it down yet still show technical aspect of the fabrication (welds and panels).

Weld up a couple of scraps and shoot them with semi flat black or high gloss red or black and see what it looks like. Matching the color of the engine side cases might work too.

Is the seat side panel color changing or are you staying with the Evel Knievel theme? :happy57:

Appreciate the suggestions! You might be right on the white (I'm not a poet and you know it, bored at work not being a jerk, etc.). Anyway, I'll have to ponder that over a bit keeping in mind that the wheels will be replaced (BST's Baby :jumping41 ), the frame may be powdercoated together with the sub so it all needs to come together when that's done..
Thanks for the compliments, wish I could take credit for the craftsmanship!!

Yeah, I'm not sure.. The thing with gold is that it gets tacky real quick. I like a bit of bling as much as the next guy, but I ain't Mr. T. you know... Some gold lines (possibly welds) on a flat black tank on the other hand..

This going to be a really cool bike!

Maybe powdercoat the frame and subframe flat black. Polish the tank and add some carbon fiber accents to a few of the flat faces so it ties in with the BST's ( by the way). It'd be a shame to paint over the welds IMO...and annodizing always seems to fade. Black seat all the way...maybe in a cool leather.

A black tank would make it look like the stealth fighter with the angles IMO. Maybe cool...maybe not.

White seat is a cool idea, but it'll look grubby in short order if you ride much. I was considering continuing the blue/white stripe in leather across the seat of my Monstrada when I get it re-upholstered, but I think it'd be gray in no time.

Just what you wanted...a bunch of opinions on how to finish it!! :happy57::happy57:

Painting over the welds wouldn't necessarily hide them, it might actually tastefully accentuate them. Similar to painting wood, it can drawn more attention to the grain. Speaker cabinets are one example.

You could also consider the new generation Ducati logo as a die cut decal installed on the tank before painting then remove it to expose either glass beaded, polished, or jewel finish aluminum.

Bike's all torn up again, new frame will be ready for powdercoating hopefully not too long from now!!
Also got some awesome headlight bracket concepts from Kent, thanks Jeremy for passing on contact info for Sean and Lee/Kent!!

Not much to post lately, bike's all in bits again to get stuff powdercoated and painted... Time-consuming for sure, doesn't help that work's a b*tch and I'll be out travelling for the next 2 weeks.
Anyways, headlight brackets are done and came out pretty awesome (thanks Kent!!):

Yeah, I got a ton of stuff to anodize. What's their pricing like?

$125 flat price for pretty much as much as you can fit in a batch (which is a ton). That is for hard anodizing. Only 1 color can be done per batch. So each color would be a minimum of $125.

Well, haven't posted in a while here, or anywhere for that matter. Work's been crazy, just about to head out on another weeklong trip, but at least there is some progress..
Got the frame and sub powdercoated, turned out pretty good. Have another bunch of bits and pieces to get done. Worked on the electrics a bit trying to tuck it all away out of sight, it's a chore on these bikes being pretty much a copy/paste from faired bikes.
Should have more in a week or so as we're starting to build her back up, hope to have her on the road some time late May.. Sorry for the crappy iPhone pics, didn't bring the camera..

Alright, we've got some good progress over the weekend. While the exhaust is still not fully welded up, we got a lot of wiring work done and pretty much bolted her back together.
I'm quite pleased with how it's coming together, the red/white/black combo works pretty well (tank will get some more paint in due time), it sort of looks like a little street tracker. Here's some pics, should be all done next time I post up!!

YES!! Finally got the bike home today and got some seat-time. She feels incredibly light, yet somewhat sluggish.. The mapping is way off though, it's hardly idling even when warm so it'll take a Power Commander and some dyno time to get it running smooth.
Even so, had a blast on the backroads and am real happy with how it turned out.
Still to do:

Slipper install
Power Commander install+dyno
Paint tank (not sure what I'm doing yet, so I'll take some time to ponder that, tank capacity is about 3.5 gallons btw)
Find mirrors (found a crappy $8 bicycle mirror for the trip home but last it after a mile lol..)
Heat-wrap pipe, should be first on the list as I have a nice mark on my leg..

I know I've been lame with the pics so I took a couple better ones:

I like projects like this and respect the dedication you have to see it through. I can see that it needs a heat shield of some sort over that pipe. Ouch!

That bike would put ones license in jeapordy for sure but would be be ideal at Thunderhill or ORP!

Right, so before someone else posts up, I'll let you all know that I have reluctantly put out a feeler on eBay for the bike.
I'm considering my options and have been for quite some time. The one option is to sell a bike that I poured a ton of heart, soul and dedication into, the other option is to do more work this winter and finish it properly and enjoy the upcoming riding season...
The reason I'm considering selling is the same as anyone really, I barely have time to ride anymore with all my work travel and I'm not immune to the economy and could probably benefit from some extra cash under the mattress (with some financial room for a little low budget side project :happy57:).

Anyway, thought I'd let you all know, if you know anyone interested in a street tracker/motard hybrid hooligan, let me know!

Price?

Tough, that's kinda why I went the eBay route, just see what sort of offers pop up.. I'd say I would probably entertain offers over $10k, wouldn't make sense for any less (doesn't make much sense over that either, I know..).

Good luck. Will be a tough sell for that price for a salvaged bike. Even with all the goodies that you've put on it. A good reason never to throw so much heart, sweat, and money into a salvaged bike like that, cuz you'll never get it back...even in a good economy. Good luck however. Beautifully done btw!

Yeah, thanks but for that money I'll most definitely keep it.. Like I said, contemplating my options and I'm not hurting for cash quite that bad. Funny that "your buddy" offered $5k first, what made you lower your offer?

Well, sad as I am to break the news, she's gone but certainly not forgotten. I had her listed on eBay and a local from Tacoma offered a trade for a 690SMC and a healthy chunk of change that I couldn't pass up. I have to say I do miss her now that she's gone, but man it's good to be back on a big sumo! Luckily for all of us, the new owner's wife is a photographer so they sent me some SWEET pics, finally ha!

What's up guys, been a while!

So what if, hypothetically, I might have some delayed seller's remorse on this one and would like to find out if this bike is still roaming the Northwest, how would I go about it?
I figure I'd start here and see if anyone knows its whereabouts.. I believe it was last seen at Ducati Bellevue and sold by one of their techs (who was the buyer initially, don't think he faired well at DB or elsewhere), I can run a VIN check too but that's $25 these days!

Any of you fine ladies/gents seen her around, shoot me a PM or post up :happy44:

Not sure where your going to find this bike, the buyer of your bike name was/is Brian Brent and he was a service writer at the old dealership, he used to live in Tacoma but I believe he is now incarcerated at a Washington state penitentiary. You could easily find his wife's name and number and call her and see if she has the bike still... but most likely it was sold again. Oh and if you do make contact w/ Brian then tell him he needs to come up with some money owed to us and a couple customers of ours.....

Wow. I'm speechless, slightly shook-en up and sickened.

I don't want to wonder too far off topic but I have to comment on this as I actually purchased a bike from this guy (a KTM 690 SMC) back in 2011 when he worked at Eastside. He seemed like a stand up guy and actually went above and beyond during the purchase so it both saddens and shakes me up to read this.
