View Full Version : 5.2-3.2010 Thunderhill Keigwins Trackday

I still have 3 more Keigwins days in my track pack. Has anyone decided on other days this summer?

The answer is: Yes, Mr Wilcox! :jumping41

So far we have Bong, Mark C, Sara, and I heading down to Thunderhill, May 2 and 3. We're going to switch it up a bit and stay @ the Days Inn this time, same price as the Baymont, and right across from Starbucks.

(So Sieg, this one has your name all over it! :happy57:)

Anyone else?

May 2nd?
Hmmmm. I don't have a bike, but depending on what happens maybe I'll ride my Multi down.
Somehow I don't think the 300 with street tyres would be all that fun (or maybe a couple of corners would be- I can think of one spot I'll be I could get some great air)

Darn Bong is supposed to buy me that RS250, but keeps bringing up minor details like cash.

Sieg, we're leaving a spot open for you on the trailer so no excuses this time!

How about we get our Miller group together for this as a nice warmup for the big track :happy44:

Come finish the 851 for me while I'm gone and you are more than welcome to take it, Mark.
Some spray paint, light assembly and one little bit of aluminum to fab is all it needs.

Hey! I'm looking at www.keigwin.com and not seeing anybody signed up yet for Thunderhill.

I just purchased my Track Day Ticket Pack (TDTP) and signed up for both Thill in May and Miller in June.

So what are the dates and estimated time of pick up and delivery in Springfield? :cool2:

OK it's possible. It looks like the latest flight out on Sunday is 6:55. I have to be back to Seattle that night as I have a Monday morning flight, with my customers, on the 4th. Would someone be able to pick me up in Sacramento and drop me at the airport Sunday night? I might even go to Sac a couple of days early to see my Grandmother who just had her 95th birthday.

Questions:

- Bring at least one 5 gal can - If you have two it's better. Otherwise it's a run for gas at lunch time.
Viet's website showed out of stock on Corse III's I'm planning on bringing my own, they'll be nice and mount it for a fee won't they?
- Yep

Rider numbers assigned or stick some on in advance for photog?
No.....I won't run #1. Maybe OF for Old Fart.
- GotBlueMilk will give you a number - Keigwins doesn't provide one. So if you want something fancy you can setup whatever you want yourself prior
Photog website for pre-registration or sign up at track?
Monday the better day for photog or go both days?

Food on site?
- Yeah - but not so great. Bring A LOT to drink and whatever you need to survive the day

Amount of cash on hand for what shared expenses?

Questions:

Bring one 5 gal fuel filled can and buy fuel on site? Starting with a full tank and a 5 gal can will suffice for one day. We'll refill in town at the end of the day.

Viet's website showed out of stock on Corse III's I'm planning on bringing my own, they'll be nice and mount it for a fee won't they? Yes they can and will mount tires for a small fee.

Rider numbers assigned or stick some on in advance for photog?
No.....I won't run #1. Maybe OF for Old Fart. Photog will give you numbers.

Photog website for pre-registration or sign up at track?
Monday the better day for photog or go both days? Get the two day special.

Food on site? Yes there is food on site - usually grilled steak/chicken sandwich's and salad.

Amount of cash on hand for what shared expenses? As the newbie Thunderhill attendee...you will be expected to bring enough cash for the group! :happy44:

Are we all set for rooms at the Baymont?

According to Accuweather it's going to be 81 and sunny by Sunday.

Right now, not so good but all the rain should be gone by Thursday leaving a clean track surface just in time.

I haven't checked but usually Dave Moss is there to dial in suspension. Last year it was $40.00 for a whole day.

I still question why the designer made it so difficult to remove the fairings, he should have studied Tamborini's more :bang: Oh well it's done and now she's really ready for Thunderhill and Miller :riding:

One nice benefit of the track fairings are the bigger air intake snorkels, should add a few hp's

Weather is boarderline too hot for this kid but I'll suffer through it. :happy57:
I've ridden the RC8 at Miller East and Laguna Seca, and a few hundred street miles. It's pretty comfy and generates sneaky velocity because the power delivery is so linear. It definitely doesn't have the low grunt of Bong's 1098.

Thanks. I've not always liked the appearance of some of KTM's bikes, but the RC8 is one beautiful SBK, particularly in track form. Enjoy.

After an early start we made is safely to Thill in time to secure our favorite covered paddock area. The ride down was pretty uneventful even with the number of leo sightings along the way.

Here we are at Sieg's getting ready to load the RS250, RC8 and Superduke R into the truck and trailer.

We decided to walk the entire track to get a better feel for the flowing nature of the design, boy did I learn A LOT about the level of elevation this track has. What I thought were flat areas turned out to reveal time saving elevation changes. There is definitely room for increased braking in the uphill entrances to many of the turns!

What a day...blue skies and 82* made for perfect riding conditions! Most of us hadn't ridden on the track (or street for that matter) since last summer so it was going to be slow learning laps to get back in the groove. By the looks of my front tire I was riding very gingerly for the first session :o

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o248/bong1098/4-2-10%20Thunderhill/DSC_0116.jpg

Track action was full of fun and action throughout the day, we all got more and more comfortable as the day progressed. The 1098S with it's new piston/cylinder is running as strong as ever. Sieg let me ride the RC8 - very smooth engine, easy turning, stable in long sweepers, nice brakes, very tall and fun to ride. The engine doesn't seem to have as much torque as the 1098S but the speed is very deceptive, it didn't take long for me to ride at pace after just one lap.

I also got to sample Wilcox's 250, what a blast to rip around turns at high speeds. It's so light and nimble you can just flick it in without too much effort at all. Also without engine braking it was easy to modulate entry speed with just the front brakes, no back end fishtailing as on liter vtwins. It even handles the dirt with no problems

This track day adventure to Thunderhill was outstanding. For me, it was all a big thumbs up experience:thumbup:. I wish it were about a 4 hour drive instead of 12 plus. That would put it far enough away not to take it for granted but close enough to allow us to get there more often.

Smooth riding is an under statement! Talk about a husband and wife team, you two were on rails around that track. Mark's form and speed is really looking impressive too. Things I learned on this trip...

1. It took a day to get my brain caught up with the amount of information my eyes were sending, especially entry speeds.
2. If you want to pass someone on the outside of a blind - off camber turn, make sure they don't go into a false neutral and run wide. :confused6
3. Passing on the inside or outside can be done with little to no drama if planned well in advance.
4. BMW S1000RR has SERIOUS pull on the front straight
5. Being passed on the outside of Turn 2 by an 8yr old riding a 125 is pretty funny!
6. DNW folks make for the best trackday buddies :)
7. Watching Ed lay down a nice darkie exiting Turn 1 at 100mph+ is pretty cool :happy44:

I admired your intent, almost as much as I enjoyed calling you on it. :action027

3. Passing on the inside or outside can be done with little to no drama if planned well in advance. The real beauty of T-Hill is the number of lines available in multiple corners, especially T-12 :happy57:

4. BMW S1000RR has SERIOUS pull on the front straight
Amen!

5. Being passed on the outside of Turn 2 by an 8yr old riding a 125 is pretty funny! Having that same kid knife inside you spotting your front wheel at least 9-12" while turning in to T-6 and not being able to catch him through T-7 and T-8 while riding a bike with 120 hp more than his scooter is humbling to say the least.

6. DNW folks make for the best trackday buddies :)
Ten years ago you would have never convinced me that relationships built through the internent would end up being so meaningful in my life..........

7. Watching Ed lay down a nice darkie exiting Turn 1 at 100mph+ is pretty cool :happy44:
Having Ed go around you on the outside of T-3 with his knee down like you're riding a confused turtle is.......uh.......well..........I'm at a loss for words. Though I did suggest to Lance that redesigning T-3 with a bank like the Half-Pipe at ORP wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

Thank you my friends for another memorable life experience.

Things I learned on this trip...

1. Dirt riding all fall/winter kept me from completely forgetting how to ride.
2. Chevron does suck!
3. 82 with a breeze is better than 91 and calm.
4. Sieg is a constant tinkerer
5. A large roll of blue shop towels makes an excellent pillow
6. The truly fast riders are all 8 years old on 125's.

oh yes! A 250 Aprillia handles well in tall grass!

Attempt to pass on the outside, 90mph, rider being passed hits a false neutral = :confused6

Just to fill in a bit here...

I had just aced the entry into 2 and the drive out wasn't half bad either. I am hard on the gas and setting up perfectly for 3 just to the right of that black tar snake which is a well known reference point for that corner. 90 mph sounds about right. If I had been listening to my buddies advice about staying in 3rd gear from turn 2 to 5a, there would have been no need to downshift. However, I did not do it that way and a downshift was attempted going into 3. Drat! False neutral! Now I'm freewheeling towards the outside of 3 having a very tense moment myself! I was able to gather it together and get steered in the right direction and motor on having no idea that Bong was trying to pass on the outside and that I had just punted him into the weeds. What were you thinking trying to pass a big boy bike with that puny little 2 stroke, on the outside? You're not 8 years old!

It was about 5 laps later and I cruise back into our pit being the last one to arrive and everyone was glaring at me as if I was public enemy numer 1.

I didn't realize until the end of the day when we did our walk around the track just how far off road the little 250 had gone.

Good thing Bong enjoys dirt riding!

Mark should consider adding a roll of black gafers tape and a silver Sharpie to his track day kit. Of course he'd have everyone will be doing a last second walk-around before staging which is good and bad. :happy57:

Elbowz Ed shows us how it's done on turn 2.

We will need to get him elbow sliders next time out to Thunderhill!
