Spy shot from the Mugello test. Most rumors said no more Single Sided Swingarm, but its hard to tell if that's the case or not from this picture.

Is that Reuben Xaus riding it, is it is just a REALLY tiny bike?

At the rate sportbike is development is going, in a few years I am going to have to buy two of them and wear them like roller blades.

Scottsst

I have been hearing rumors that the new superbike is very small. With the engine as compact as it is I'm sure the rest of the bike is just as small. I would think that they are going with the same idea that Aprila did with the RSV4 and make the bike 600 size

JohnM
05-31-2011, 08:36 PM
Also looks like that picture is under braking. Maybe a very open tail section + compressed front forks are making it look smaller than normal?

Scottsst

I was just reading on Facebook that Danilo Petrucci, the test rider in that picture is 5′ 11″ tall so that bike is pretty small

Is the bike actually small or are we just not used to seeing a still image from a bike hard on the brakes from this perspective?

Someone do a photoshop comparison against a 1198 in similar conditions stat!

no frame, Buel pipes, .... might take a while to like the looks of this new breed.
Cool to see Bayless back at it again. If Checa can win on an old Duc, this should be a walk in the park for Troy.

He's not racing any more...he's just under contract to Ducati as a development/test rider. He also rode the D16 last year (and couldn't do any better than Hayden...which may be why Ducati started changing the bike). It'd be great if he came back to WSBK though!!

He wants to race again, says the wife and family are the only reason not to. I bet he does do SBK next year.

1 more year, one more championship on a 4th duc model. He won't be able to pass up that opportunity.

To be clear, is it understood that this bike will be the 1198's replacement? Or is this a smaller run, special edition kind of bike?

kurtfriedrich
06-27-2011, 05:07 PM
good question.

When they introduced the 1098, they stopped selling the 999 and the 749. They made a handful of fancy 999s (Part's Unlimited), but that's it. We had to wait a year for the 848. I expect this 1199 will be the end of the 1198, and if history repeats, also the 848. I personally hope they make a 2012 848 with DTC as a last life kicker, but I suspect they held off on the 848 last time to have more production capacity to make the highly demanded 1098. If true, then we are likely to see the same thing again this time, with no smaller superbike for 2012.

Scottsst
06-27-2011, 08:53 PM
I think they may build an 848R just because there was a 749R and a 748R and make it in very small numbers. I'm not sure it will be super trick bike like the 1098R is but I really hope it's got some of the cool DP catlog parts on it off the show room floor!

I bought an Italian magazine that has a 4 page story (with pics) of the new superbike, I have no idea what the article says but the pics are pretty neat.

Troy says the new engine is high revving and an absolute beast! For a street bike with street tires he set some pretty impressive times at Mugello

I've briefly tried to find this info out but can't find any really clear info. What was the release schedule for the 1098/1198? Did the 1098 arive in both base and S form at the same time, or was the S released later? How long into the 1198 cycle did the SP show up?

Dave R

1098 shown for the first time at EICMA in Nov 2006, released by Feb 2008. S followed in a few months also the S Tri Color. 1198 came out in 2009 model, SP for 2011

So that rear tire must be a 200. Makes sense to me, but correct me if I'm wrong. Ducati has already done a very good job squeezing out as much HP as possible with the current platform, so the only way to further technology, would be to push everything out a bit more. Right? Dammmmnnn....NOW I'm interested. Before, I was like "meh...", now I'm totally intrigued.

tiny

Yep, RSV4 sized, it's like they said fvck it to us taller Americans.

This lovely little nugget arrived in my inbox this morning. 3+ minute video going over the new SQ engine. Some of the nuggets I took away

1. 195 crank hp
2. First time in a Ducati engine, chain driven camshafts
3. Wet clutch with sport "slipper function".
4. Lighter engagement feel on the clutch lever
5. 500 parts to the new engine, only 15 of them carry over from the previous twin engine

Enjoy!

Video of it makes it look much better than the photos do, IMO at least. I like it too.

Not a huge fan of the looks of the tank tho. All that bs aside, I bet it sure rides really nice. Looks to be the same size chasis as the smaller Japanese 600, maybe? Looks are important, but how it rides is far more important to me. That being said, I would love a test ride of this one ASAP. :)

Still very happy I have my 1198, however. Glad I don't regret my purchase after still seeing the new(er) sbk...

The wheels of the new Panigale look great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lastly, looking at my 1198, and looking at the 1199, my 1198 already looks outdated. And I mean way, way outdated. Like a fat pig compared to the new Panigale. hmmf....

Its official. I will sell my unborn children for this bike. I know I just picked up my 1198 SP but now I am starting to think I should totally park it all winter and sell it next March so I can pick up one of these amazing machines...

Oh my word. That's a beautiful motorcycle. When's the demo get in Dave? I'll volunteer to ride the display model over to the Seattle Motorcycle show in December.

Wow! IMO, Ducati left nothing to dislike. I even think the mirrors are OK. Wow!

Their server must be overwhelmed, because I couldn't get the Superquadrata page to open. I want to see the tricolore. Wow!

I hope they have Angry Birds progammed into it for when you are waiting for your next session on the track.

I like cliches! At least the kind that involve beautiful women.

There's hardly anthing that is not improved by the presence of a beautiful woman.

Is a shame cuz I haven't seen a set of bar end mirrors that don't offend my design senses on the SBK's. They look great on the monster series. Maybe time to figure out some kind of custom fab job...
