Does this happen from the factory often? I've got one on my latest 900SS/SP. I figured someone just turned it around but after closer inspection I believe this was installed wrong @ the factory?

doubtful it happened at the factory.. at least on all the ones I have sold over the years I have never seen this. Are you original owner?

I would think doutbful too except when I went to take it a part, it doesn't looks like it's ever been removed (oxidation and general wear) both show it's been backwards installed only. It looks like there are a bunch of allen set screws that hold the main mount to the tank itself after you take off the normal cap mounting screws. Those set screws don't look like they have ever been reset.
This is #102 if you happen to have any records yourself Dave. I just picked this up a few weeks ago now.
The only reason I could think of to even mess with this would be if they had some sort of tank issue I guess.

During a routine fuel filter replacement, the previous owner rotated the filling cap so the elephant was closer to the handlebars. My guess is on the next filter replacement, he would have completed the circle so the elephant was at 6:00 again. It's the sort of thing I would do.

I'm pretty sure it makes the bike worth about a million doll hairs... right? ;)
