I noticed today the rubber cone (the splash guard and max fuel limit indicator) fell into the tank. I pulled the cone out and tried to reseat it but wasn't able to. Is there a trick to this, or am I SOL?

Wasn't able to reseat it why? It kept falling in or it won't fit back into the original spot or what's going on?

DirtyRonin, it's pretty common for that rubber thingy to fall inside the tank. You don't need it, leaving it out is ok.

I can get the rubber cone back in the tank but I can't seat in the grove without it falling completely in the tank. Is there a way to take the entire gas cap assembly off so I put the cone on from the other side? I see the hex bolts around the rim but I thought that only holds the trim around the gas cap on.

Or should I just leave it off like lll0228 said. It's not that big of a deal. But is kinda annoying, being a brand new bike and all...

If you really want to get it back on, you can take the whole cap out with hex screws etc. You can then sit it where it belongs and superglue it down. :) It's actually a very common thing to fall off. Some people don't even know they had it!

Thanks for the help! Normally this wouldn't have been a big deal but this happend when I was riding with some friends (on of them used to be a motorcycle mechanic who worked on Japanese bikes). So after telling them how much I loved the bike, this happend. They knew it was minor thing. But I still took a little shit for it. D'OH!

In oregon theres a rule where the attendents are supposed to pump the gas. Most of them will just hand the biker the pump but twice now I've ran into Nazi ones who insist (cause I'm a woman? ). Gas station attendent upholding the law to the letter?!?

The last one exclaimed (picture a hillbilly accent) "I can't see the gas, whatzit rubber thing here?" He must of poked it, it fell off by evening.

Leo, I'm glad to know I really don't need it. Is it just there for a measure of how full the tank is?

Ok, I got the cone back on. But yesterday I filled the tank and noticed a little fuel starting to appear around the rubber gasket (the rubber trim you see on the outside of the gas cap assembly) on the outside of the tank after riding. Did I need to put some sort of sealer or dressing on the gasket to keep it from leaking?

Make sure you press the gas cap all the way down (with the key turned). The cap should be flush with the rest of the cap assembly.
