My wife and I just completed an "around the US" (7,600 miles, 4 week) trip on our new ST3. TOO SWEET! Speed is legal in most (forget Oregon!) states.
My point is that after a tire-and-a-half, an engine service was long overdue.
We were in Kentucky at 6K and they were planning a $650+ hurt job on me
and my local mechanic said, "change the oil and maintain the chain ...and don't worry, extra miles won't hurt that engine".....he was ever so right!
I rode into Oregon at 11,650 miles (last service was at 600 miles) and my dealer now tells me that the valves were all in spec. The mechanic is an aviation mechanic and wants to change one shim but it is not required....I ain't gonna squawk.
So, fear not my brethren...the water cooled ST3 can go from 0 to 12,000 with nothing more than oil, filter, chain oil.
I know that the "truly enlightened" will say I have violated Desmo-doctrine and could be sent of Bolgia 7 of Italian Hell for this....But do not fear.
That baby is tough!!
We were overloaded and drove WAY TOO Fast and I am now a true believer.
If you plan a long trip on an ST...let me know...I may have some input

Sounds exciting, what general route did you take? You'll be right with Egan soon at the rate you are putting miles on your duc!
